The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Howard J. Chamberlain, Jr. (MCSN: 469079), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Member of Reconnaissance Company, Headquarters Battalion, FOURTH Marine Division, during operations against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 21 June 1944. Riding unprotected on the top of a tank through withering hostile fire to a shell hole forward of our lines where his commanding officer lay seriously wounded, Private First Class Chamberlain bravely assisted in placing the stricken man on the vehicle and then shielded him with his own body on the return trip. His daring initiative, personal heroism and concern for another in the face of grave danger reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Chamberlain and the United States Naval Service.
