The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Lucius F. Cassidy (MCSN: 351677), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Leader of a Demolitions Team of Company A, First Engineer Battalion, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, 15 September 1944. Landing under intense fire from numerous enemy pillboxes, Sergeant Cassidy led his men forward under the covering fire of the assault unit. Although he and all six members of his team were wounded while advancing, he personally eliminated two enemy pillboxes with demolitions and, directing his men in the destruction of ten others, inflicted heavy casualties upon the enemy. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Sergeant Cassidy and the United States Naval Service.
