The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Eugene P. Carwile (MCSN: 512171), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Automatic Rifleman serving with the Second Battalion, Twenty-Fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, from 15 June to 9 July; and on Tinian, Mariana Islands, 24 July 1944. A skilled and courageous fighter, Private First Class Carwile repeatedly closed with the enemy in caves and fortified positions and was attempting to put a Japanese machine-gun nest out of action when mortally wounded. By his outstanding technical ability and zealous efforts, Private First Class Carwile had contributed effectively to the ultimate success of our vital missions in these strategically important enemy strongholds, and his unswerving devotion to duty throughout this period was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
