The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Platoon Sergeant Daniel J. Carroll (MCSN: 294343), United States Marine Corps, for gallantry in action while serving with the Fourth Marine Raider Battalion at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, in exposing himself to hostile small arms and mortar fire to retrieve a machine gun as it was about to fall into the hands of the enemy on 20 July 1943.
