The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Victor H. Carr (MCSN: 965479), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Rifleman in a Platoon of Company I, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 25 May 1945. While advancing with his squad, Private Carr determined the location of three hostile mortar positions and, unhesitatingly pressing forward under intense fire, succeeded by his accurate rifle fire in destroying one of the mortars and in rendering the other two ineffective. Although severely wounded during this action, he remained steadfast until his platoon advanced to a place where it was able to destroy the remaining two mortars. His heroic action and outstanding devotion to duty were a contributing factor in his platoon’s success, and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
