The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major Edgar F. Carney, JR. (MCSN: 0-8121), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of the Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces at Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 4 June 1945. During the assault landing on Oroku Peninsula, Major Carney perceived that his assault companies had lost coordination due to the breakdown of several amphibious tractors and Japanese resistance on the beach. Ordering his tractor to land, he quickly made his way through enemy fire and mined areas to a forward position where he could observe and control his front line companies. Against bitter and progressively increasing resistance throughout the attack, he functioned from positions close to the front lines under constant hostile fire of all types. His calm and brilliant direction of the attack resulted in the successful seizure of the beachhead with a minimum of casualties. By his bravery and outstanding leadership, Major Carney contributed directly to the success of his Battalion and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
