The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Alvie N. Carney (MCSN: 870558), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Rifleman of Weapons Company, Twenty-eighth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 17 March 1945. Pinned down and unable to remove casualties due to intense fire from a Japanese machine gun nest and pillbox while on a volunteer combat patrol against an enemy sector of resistance, Private First Class Carney seized a machine gun and, moving to an exposed position, destroyed the hostile machine gun nest and killed its occupants. Aided by a comrade, he then set up a rocket launcher in the face of deadly enemy sniper fire and silenced the pillbox with a series of well-placed rockets. Through his cool and efficient actions, Private First Class Carney enabled the patrol to reorganize, evacuate the casualties, and accomplish its mission. His courageous devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
