The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Santo J. Carmigiano (MCSN: 554175), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company B, Fifth Tank Battalion, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 24 March 1945. Quick to act when the crew members of a disabled tank were trapped in a narrow defile flanked by cliffs from which the Japanese were throwing hand grenades, Private First Class Carmigiano dismounted from his own tank at a point about one hundred and fifty yards in front of friendly lines. Braving enemy small-arms and grenade fire, he risked his life to move back and forth in the hostile territory to place tow lines on the vehicle and secure them. Returning to his own vehicle, he towed the disabled tank and its crew out of the trap, thereby saving the lives of the men and enabling the tank to be returned to combat service. His bold initiative and courageous action reflect the highest credit on Private First Class Carmigiano and the United States Naval Service.
