The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant William L. Cardiff (MCSN: 0-14255), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Leader of a 37-mm. Gun Platoon attached to the First Battalion, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese Forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 29 June 1944. Stoutly advancing inland through heavily fortified Japanese territory, First Lieutenant Cardiff valiantly assisted in reducing two strongly defended enemy pillboxes well protected by hostile snipers and, despite terrific hostile machine-gun fire, continuously and effectively directed the fire of his gun platoon until he fell, mortally wounded. By his inspiring leadership and heroic efforts, he contributed immeasurably to the ultimate conquest of this strategically important area, and his cool courage and unwavering devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon First Lieutenant Cardiff and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
