The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major Robert A. Campbell (MCSN: 0-7885), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of Weapons Company, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, from 14 to 18 March 1945. On 15 March, Major Campbell personally directed the operations of his command from front line positions which were under hostile fire during an attack against enemy emplacements on a well-fortified ridge at the eastern end of the Island. Although wounded on 16 March, he continued to exercise command and braved Japanese fire in order to better direct his combat unit while it eliminated the last remnants of enemy forces in that area. By his tactical skill, exemplary leadership and courageous devotion to duty, Major Campbell contributed materially to the success of his command in accomplishing its mission in a most difficult operation over hazardous terrain, and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
