The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Peter M. Campbell (MCSN: 439712), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company E, Second Battalion, Twenty-first Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Cape Torokina Area, Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 18 and 19 November 1943. Assuming charge of six men trapped on the enemy side of the Piva River during an engagement with Japanese forces, Private First Class Campbell remained behind and personally covered their successful withdrawal. On 19 November, he courageously led a patrol through hostile lines and, at great personal risk, obtained vital information regarding Japanese positions, thereby insuring an effective artillery barrage before he was killed by enemy fire in the ensuing action. Private First Class Campbell’s resourceful initiative and valiant devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
