The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal James L. Campbell (MCSN: 370175), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Leader of a 37-mm. Gun Squad of Weapons Company, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Peleliu, Palau Islands, 18 September 1944. Wounded and thrown into the water when the amphibian truck in which he was coming ashore with the assault waves was hit by enemy anti-boat fire about two hundred yards from the beach, Corporal Campbell started toward the beach but, upon hearing a cry for help from the burning truck, unhesitatingly returned to the vehicle to assist a seriously wounded comrade despite the continuing hostile fire. Despite the pain of his own injuries, Corporal Campbell dragged the man from the vehicle and carried him to the beach where he secured medical aid, thereby saving the life of his comrade. His courageous and unselfish conduct and outstanding devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
