The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal George A. Calvit (MCSN: 431235), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Rifleman in a Platoon of Weapons Company, Twenty-sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 15 March 1945. While his platoon was in the assault with tank support, Corporal Calvit, on his own initiative, directed fire from a tank against an enemy machine-gun nest which was holding up his platoon and an adjacent company. Although the heavy mortar, artillery and small-arms fire which the tanks drew had driven off several others who had attempted to act as guides, Corporal Calvit stood beside the tank and, pointing his weapon at the target, fired tracers into it to designate its location until he was seriously wounded by enemy fire. His indomitable courage and unselfish devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
