The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Private First Class Harry T. Calkins (MCSN: 472865), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for gallantry in action while serving with the Fourth Marine Raider Battalion at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 20 July 1943, in aggressively advancing thirty yards forward of the front lines under exposure to heavy enemy fire to deliver such effective and destructive automatic fire as to enable his comrades to rout the enemy from their well-entrenched positions with hand grenades.
