The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Agustus J. Cahill (MCSN: 460370), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Tank Gunner of Company A, First Tank Battalion, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 12 June 1945. Acting on his own initiative and from a position well forward of the front lines, Corporal Cahill rode on the back of his tank with two wounded Marines through intense enemy mortar and small-arms fire and covered the wounded men with his own body until the safety of an aid station was reached. By his unselfish and courageous conduct Corporal Cahill contributed materially to saving the lives of his wounded comrades, and his devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
