The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Edward Tipton Burrell (MCSN: 259051), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as an Antiaircraft Gunner while serving with the Marine Detachment, U.S.S. CABOT (CVL-28), in action against enemy Japanese forces off the coast of the Philippine Islands on 25 November 1944. Although seriously wounded during an enemy attack, Sergeant Burrell refused medical aid and, remaining at his station, directed his men in maintaining accurate fire on all targets as long as his gun would bear. His courage and devotion to duty, despite grave hazards, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
