The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant Bobby W. Burnette (MCSN: 0-51202), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Commander of Company B, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), during action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 24 April 1951. When his platoon’s position was subjected to violent attack by a large enemy force during the hours of darkness, Second Lieutenant Burnette, despite serious wounds sustained during the initial assault, refused medical attention and, fearlessly exposing himself to the devastating hostile fire, moved from man to man, shouting words of encouragement and directing the group in delivering effective fire upon the enemy. Remaining with his unit throughout the nightlong attack although suffering from severe pain, he skillfully directed the defense of the position and inspired his men with his bravery. By his valiant fighting spirit, outstanding leadership and selfless devotion to duty, Second Lieutenant Burnette aided immeasurably in the successful defense of the strategic ground and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
