The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Robert F. Burkhardt (MCSN: 263821), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 17 June 1944. Courageous and aggressive in the face of terrific fire from Japanese guns, Sergeant Burkhardt rendered valuable service during initial operations on this strategically important enemy stronghold. Acting as platoon leader during a night counterattack by hostile tanks, he brought his troops from a rear area to reinforce another sector of the company, despite intense fire from 37-mm. and 75-mm. machine guns, organized his men and obtained ammunition, thereby enabling them to aid materially in the repulse of the enemy in his sector. His determined initiative and outstanding leadership reflect the highest credit upon Sergeant Burkhardt and the United States Naval Service.
