The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Elbert Bunch (MCSN: 1211072), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Rifleman of Company H, Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 13 August 1952. Although previously wounded by enemy artillery fire, Private First Class Bunch steadfastly remained at his post while aiding in the defense of a strategically important hill position. Refusing evacuation despite the imminent danger of a hostile counterattack, he continued to fire his automatic rifle until he fell unconscious and later died of his wounds. By his inspiring courage and resolute spirit of self-sacrifice, Private First Class Bunch upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
