The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John J. Bump (MCSN: 426474), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company K, Third Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces in the vicinity of Mount Chachao, Guam, Mariana Islands, on the early morning of 29 July 1944. When five Japanese infiltrated the lines and attacked the occupants of an adjoining foxhole, Private First Class Bump voluntarily left his own foxhole and, in the face of enemy fire as well as fire from his own troops, went to the aid of his comrades. Unable to give help by rifle fire due to darkness, he jumped into the foxhole where hand-to-hand fighting was taking place and, using his rifle as a club, succeeded in killing two of the enemy. By his prompt action and coolness under fire, Private First Class Bump aided materially in repulsing the hostile attack. His devotion to the welfare of his fellow Marines was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
