Commander in Chief, Pacific: Serial 919 (June 16, 1944)

The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Alvin Chip Bryson (MCSN: 382097), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in combat against enemy Japanese forces on Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islands, November 20, 1943. Volunteering to divert the light machine-gun fire of the enemy from the main area occupied by his platoon, Private Bryson, armed with an automatic rifle, moved to a position from which he could attack the Japanese emplacement. When his first volley registered on the enemy, he fearlessly advanced under their answering fire and silenced their position, but was fatally wounded. Private Bryson’s heroic devotion to duty was an inspiration to his comrades and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
