The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant John B. Brunson, Jr. (MCSN: 0-39077), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Leader attached to Headquarters and Service Company, First Tank Battalion, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 11 June 1945. When the foot troops of a coordinated tank-infantry attacking force became halted by extremely heavy, long-range Japanese fire, Second Lieutenant Brunson unhesitatingly led his platoon into the concentrated barrage in an attempt to locate the guns which impeded the advance until he was seriously wounded when his tank was hit and set afire. Undaunted, he boldly continued his hazardous mission until the enemy guns were located and destroyed, permitting the infantry to continue its assault. Disregarding his serious wounds, he directed the evacuation of the wounded tank crew, refusing aid until all others had first been treated. By his heroic actions, inspiring leadership and perseverance, Second Lieutenant Brunson was instrumental in maintaining the successful attack, thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
