The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Warren Gamaliel Brown (MCSN: 280150), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as leader of a platoon of Company F, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Cape Gloucester, New Britain, December 30, 1943. Courageously leading a squad on a mission to seek and destroy an enemy patrol sighted near our air-drones, Sergeant Brown, upon contact, immediately engaged the hostile units with vigorous fire, forcing them to take cover in pillboxes. Directing his men to a ridge when the enemy launched a fierce counterattack, he skillfully selected advantageous firing positions and, despite heavy mortar fire, moved among his men throughout the entire assault keeping his platoon leader informed of all hostile activities. Sergeant Brown’s daring initiative and selfless devotion to duty in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
