The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant James F. Brogdon (MCSN: 261219), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company L, Third Battalion, fourth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, on 11 June 1945. After one of his men had been attacked and wounded by the enemy in a cave, First Sergeant Brogdon heard the cry for help and, although fully aware of the armed enemy troops within, courageously entered the cave. Then, despite several grenades which were thrown at him, he reached his comrade and succeeded in bringing him to safety. First Sergeant Brogdon’s heroic concern for the welfare of a comrade was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
