The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Robert J. Britt (MCSN: 343002), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company L, Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu Island, Palua Group, on 4 October 1944. Valiantly disregarding his own personal safety in the face of imminent peril, Private First class Britt unhesitatingly crossed over terrain covered by enemy automatic fire to carry a vital message to an adjacent unit and, while returning to his post, heroically guided stretcher-bearers through heavy machine-gun fire and assisted in the evacuation of the casualties until he himself was mortally wounded. Private First Class Britt’s selfless conduct and unyielding devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
