The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James H. Bradley (MCSN: 941737), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Platoon Runner and Radioman of Company H, Third Battalion, Twenty-sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 16 March 1945. When his Platoon Leader and all Non-Commissioned Officers near him were wounded, Private First Class Bradley immediately notified the Company Commander of the situation and then began organizing the platoon for continuance of the attack. Despite the heavy enemy fire still sweeping the area, he boldly made his way from man to man, strengthening the lines and organizing the group. After supervising the evacuation of the wounded, Private First Class Bradley courageously led the platoon forward in an aggressive attack against heavy enemy small-arms and mortar fire until he was wounded and evacuated. His initiative, fortitude and determined spirit were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
