The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Platoon Sergeant Francis E. Bradford (MCSN: 335500), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company K, Third Battalion, Twenty-third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Marianas Group, on 15 June 1944. Upon finding himself under fierce, persistent enemy artillery and mortar fire, Platoon Sergeant Bradford promptly organized his own men and others who were separated from their unites and, under deadly opposition, resumed an aggressive attack against the enemy. As he reached the objective and his company, he immediately aided his commander in organizing the hard-pressed company which was suffering many casualties and subsequently continued his heroic efforts in the face of heavy enemy fire until mortally wounded. Platoon Sergeant Bradford’s inspiring courage and selfless conduct were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
