The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Wayne B. Bracey (MCSN: 254393), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Battalion, Second Marines, Reinforced, in action against enemy forces during the invasion of Japanese-controlled territory in the Solomon Islands Area from August 7 to 9, 1942. Undaunted by withering blasts of hostile weapons, Corporal Bracey fought with skill and daring against the well-entrenched foe during the hazardous initial landing on Tanambogo, continuing his aggressive action until he and his comrades were ordered to withdraw and proceed to Gavutu. While attempting to effect a precarious landing in the face of tremendous opposition by the enemy ashore, Corporal Bracey maintained his courage and determination throughout long periods in the water under intense fire before he and the other Marines finally succeeded in gaining the beach. His valiant devotion to duty throughout this hazardous period was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
