The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Charles Story Bowman (MCSN: 335968), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 17 June 1944. Alert and courageous in the performance of duty, Corporal Bowman boldly led his platoon through enemy infested territory to determine the location of hostile snipers retarding the advance of our forces. Repeatedly exposing himself to the enemy’s withering barrages, he fearlessly engaged heavily fortified, well-entrenched hostile positions, personally accounting for ten Japanese troops and contributing to the destruction of many more. His inspiring leadership, outstanding fortitude and cool and courageous action in the face of grave peril were essential factors in the success of our forces in capturing this vital hostile stronghold, and his zealous devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
