The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private George E. Bowes (MCSN: 308183), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company L, Third Battalion, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Tinian, Mariana Islands, 31 July 1944. Leading his squad against firmly emplaced enemy machine guns supported by riflemen, Private Bowes repeatedly exposed himself to intense fire to direct tanks against the hostile positions. On one occasion when an advancing tank by-passed a machine gun which had pinned down the supporting infantry, he braved heavy fire, dashed out to the tank and directed it back to destroy the emplacement. His aggressive fighting spirit and courageous devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
