The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Randal B. Borough (MCSN: 0-7615), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of Company F, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, 26 September 1944. Constantly exposed to intense hostile fire, Captain Borough skillfully led a tank-infantry attack over hazardous terrain and, after reaching the objective, directed his men in holding this position while another attack was organized to seize the Japanese-held hills commanding the area. Shortly after assisting in the rescue of a seriously wounded officer from an exposed position, he suffered wounds which necessitated his evacuation. His courageous devotion to duty and grave concern for the welfare of others were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
