The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant Albert S. Borek (MCSN: 0-12072), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Adjutant of the Second Battalion, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, from 20 to 24 November 1943. Working tirelessly throughout the fierce hostilities on D-Day with limited equipment and personnel, Second Lieutenant Borek expeditiously established vital communication with service companies, organized parties to service essential weapons for front line units and skillfully performed additional duties beyond his rank as Acing Operations Officer despite the enemy’s shattering, concentrated shellfire. Determined to complete an extremely perilous mission the second day of the bitter action, he commanded the loading of a vehicle with ammunition and rations for advanced elements of the Battalion and personally directed it across the open fire-swept airfield. By his forceful and inspiring leadership, his fearless initiative and cool, courageous action at great personal risk, Second Lieutenant Borek contributed materially to the success of our operations against this vital hostile stronghold, and his unwavering devotion to duty throughout the entire Tarawa Campaign reflects the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
