The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Henry F. Booth (MCSN: 934841), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-seventh Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 15 March 1945. When his platoon encountered a pocket of resistance which halted its advance, Private First Class Booth skillfully maneuvered into a position covered by enemy fire and, delivering effective automatic rifle fire, neutralized a series of four spider traps and killed all four of the occupants as they attempted to hurl hand grenades at the advancing Marines. Continuing his aggressive action, he worked his way forward to an exposed position on the flank of an enemy machine gun and killed three of the crew with hand grenades. By his intrepid fighting spirit and resolute courage, he enabled his platoon to continue the attack. His gallant conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
