The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Bruce E. Bond (MCSN: 446974), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Member of the Second Motor Transport Battalion, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Marianas Group, 10 July 1944. When his platoon of truck drivers and a few members of a Marine regiment were attacked by a strong Japanese force, Private First Class Bond courageously assisted in driving the enemy back with heavy losses and, later, volunteering to aid in wiping out the remaining Japanese, unhesitatingly made his way to the forefront of the attack and succeeded in killing at least two of the enemy before he himself was mortally wounded. Private First Class Bond’s indomitable fighting spirit and heroic disregard for personal safety were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
