The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Third Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Fourth Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Harold Eugene Johnson (AFSN: 0-3116556/42372A), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-105F Electronic Warfare Officer near Vinh, North Vietnam on 13 January 1967. On that date, Captain Johnson, while performing two mission of searching out and destroying hostile radar controlled gun and surface-to-air missile defenses discovered and was subsequently responsible for the destruction of a large convoy of loaded trucks and numerous heavily loaded river barges carrying military supplies. Despite unfavorable weather conditions and heavy anti-aircraft defenses in the area, Captain Johnson remained in the target area and acted as a Forward Air Controller, successfully directing several strike flights against these lucrative targets. He left the area twice to refuel, only to return to continue directing the attacks. His accurate assessment of the situation and positive aggressive actions were directly responsible for the outstanding accomplishment of the mission. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Johnson reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
