The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Silver Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Sixth Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Captain Harold Eugene Johnson (AFSN: 0-3116556/42372A), United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as an F-105F Electronic Warfare Officer near Thai Nguyen, North Vietnam on 18 April 1967. On that date, Captain Johnson was in the lead aircraft in a four ship SAM suppression mission. Disregarding his own personal safety, he calmly and effectively manipulated his electronic detection gear to assist in the successful suppression of the surface-to-air missile activity in the target area of the fighter-bomber force. He also assisted in the destruction of one surface-to-air missile installation. In spite of heavy ground fire, surface-to-air missile threats, and hostile aircraft in the area, Captain Johnson remained in the area for twelve minutes and aggressively engaged the hostile and threatening surface-to-air missile sites upon every encounter. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Johnson reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

On that date, Captain Johnson was in the lead aircraft of a four ship flight on a combat support mission in one of the most heavily defended areas in Southeast Asia. Disregarding his personal safety, Captain Johnson incessantly manipulated his electronic detection gear to interrogate the hostile gun-laying and surface-to-air missile guidance radars permitting all flights he was supporting to enter and depart the target area fully aware of the hostile targets. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Johnson reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

On that date, Captain Johnson assisted in the aggressive engagement of numerous surface-to-air missile sites in support of a special friendly forces “MiG Sweep” mission. In spite of bad weather and poor visibility, heavy anti-aircraft fire, and hostile aircraft activity, Captain Johnson was so effective on his SAM suppression mission that not one missile was fired at any of the friendly interceptor aircraft. His efforts directly contributed to the overall mission results of seven MiG-21 aircraft destroyed with no friendly losses. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Johnson reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
