The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Robert R. Boardman, Jr. (MCSN: 506095), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Tank Driver of Company C, First Tank Battalion, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 17 June 1945. While under heavy hostile machine gun and mortar fire, Corporal Boardman left the protection of his tank and rode on the rear to give aid and support to a seriously wounded infantryman being taken to a forward aid station. Later, when his tank was hit and disabled by an enemy anti-tank gun and his Platoon Leader was seriously wounded, he voluntarily assisted in attempting to carry the stricken man to safety through extremely heavy hostile machine gun and mortar fire. Although severely wounded, and left for dead during this endeavor, he made his way back to our lines. His outstanding courage and devotion to duty under fire were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
