The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Gunnery Sergeant Harold C. Blumenshine (MCSN: 249165), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Headquarters and Service Company, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 10 July 1944. When a band of hostile soldiers and civilians launched a sudden violent attack against the regimental ammunition dump, Gunnery Sergeant Blumenshine immediately led his men in a valiant effort to thwart the Japanese assault. Subsequently braving a fierce barrage from hostile weapons to go to the assistance of a wounded comrade, he boldly launched a single-handed attack with hand grenades and carbine fire and destroyed three of the enemy. Although his supply of ammunition was exhausted, Gunnery Sergeant Blumenshine steadfastly continued his attempts to aid the helpless man until he himself was fatally wounded by a burst of Japanese rifle fire. His daring initiative and great personal valor in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
