The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Third Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Fourth Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Lieutenant Colonel Harry W. Schurr (AFSN: 0-41901), United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a Pilot over North Vietnam on 12 August 1967. On that date, Colonel Schurr led a flight of four F-105 Thunderchiefs against the vital assigned railroad and highway bridge in North Vietnam. Assigned a flak suppression role, Colonel Schurr overcame four surface-to-air missiles and intense hostile ground fire that damaged five aircraft in the force, to deliver his ordnance with pinpoint accuracy. His flight was credited with destroying four active flak sites while avoiding any collateral damage. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Colonel Schurr reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

By his gallantry and devotion to duty Lieutenant Colonel Schurr has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

On that date, Colonel Schurr attacked and destroyed a vital complex area in North Vietnam. Despite marginal weather conditions, heavy concentrated anti-aircraft fire, and surface-to-air missile launches, he delivered his ordnance precisely on target. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Colonel Schurr reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
