The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Raymond R. Berling (MCSN: 358062), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Amphibian Tractor Battalion, Fleet Marine Force, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, on 15 September 1944. During an amphibious landing, Corporal Berling observed two men pinned down in the shallow water by the wreckage of a burning amphibious truck with other wounded personnel lying nearby and, undeterred by intense hostile mortar and small arms fire, unhesitatingly went to their aid. After assisting in extricating the two men and getting them to the beach, he made repeated trips back to the truck to help the other wounded to the shore. His coolness under fire and his prompt and courageous actions were contributing factors in saving the lives of several personnel and reflect great credit upon Corporal Berling and the United States Naval Service.
