The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Arthur A. Behling (MCSN: 442615), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company H, Second Battalion, Twenty-Second Marines, FIFTH Amphibious Corps, during an engagement against enemy Japanese forces on Parry Island, Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands, 22 February 1944. Observing that lack of ammunition was keeping a desperately needed machine gun of his squad out of action, Private Behling promptly obtained a double load of ammunition and, unhesitatingly risking his life under withering enemy fire, attempted to cross an exposed area and supply his gun. Although killed while carrying out his perilous mission, Private Behling, by his splendid example of courage, had inspired his companions to further heroic attempts which were eventually successful. His valiant spirit of self-sacrifice and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
