The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant William S. Bell (MCSN: 0-11960), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Leader of a Machine Gun Platoon attached to the Twenty-Fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Tinian, Mariana Islands, 24 July 1944. When his tractor was subjected to a withering hail of enemy small arms fire during the first wave of assault landings, First Lieutenant Bell unhesitatingly jumped to the side of the vehicle and, with bullets striking the water around him, courageously supervised and encouraged his men throughout vital unloading operations. Observing a large group of Marines pinned down by hostile machine gun fire after he had cleared the beach with his platoon, he promptly located the Japanese weapon and, fearlessly crawling to within range, annihilated the enemy position with hand grenades then proceeded to the beach and succeeded in moving his men inland before he was mortally wounded by hostile sniper fire. First Lieutenant Bell’s inspiring leadership and unwavering devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
