The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Walker Paul Beagle (MCSN: 559573), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Runner of Company B, First Battalion, Twenty-Fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces at Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 2 March 1945. When intense hostile fire halted his company’s advance, necessitating evacuation of casualties and a swift reorganization, Private Beagle immediately volunteered to assist a comrade in forming a stretcher team and, during the next three hours, aided in the evacuation of fifteen wounded men. Although wounded himself during this period, he carried vitally needed ammunition to the assault platoons on each return trip to the front line, remaining with his company until all casualties were evacuated. His outstanding courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
