The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Charles W. Barton (MCSN: 811962), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a member of Company M, Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 30 May 1945. Observing four wounded Marines lying in exposed positions while he was advancing under intense machine gun and mortar fire, Corporal Barton, accompanied by another Marine, made four successive trips through the fire-swept area to carry the men to a covered position. By his initiative, unselfish concern for the welfare of his comrades and courageous devotion to duty, Corporal Barton upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
