The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) (Posthumously) to Private Donald A. Barnes (MCSN: 474483), United States Marine Corps, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, Fourth Raider Battalion, at Bairoko Harbor, New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 20 July 1943. Hearing a wounded man cry out for help, he disregarded the danger to his own security and crawled through exceptionally heavy enemy fire to the side of his comrade and calmly assisted in administering first aid. While removing the man from the lines to a place of safety, Private Barnes received wounds from which he later died.
