The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant Robert Lee Barkwell (MCSN: 0-13989), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while in command of an Assault Demolition Team attached to the FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Namur Island, Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands, 1 February 1944. Assigned the hazardous mission of destroying fortified enemy positions, First Lieutenant Barkwell courageously led his men in several devastating attacks, he, himself, placing the charges and setting them off. Assuming command of approximately twenty-five men while operating in an advanced position during the night, he skillfully organized the defense of that sector and later, when the supply of hand grenades became low as his men opposed the infiltrating Japanese forces under cover of darkness, he personally made up grenades from available explosives and succeeded in holding his position until he was killed by the enemy. First Lieutenant Barkwell’s inspiring leadership, brilliant initiative and heroic conduct enabled his comrades to destroy about fifty of the hostile troops and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
