The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Wilfred Baldwin (MCSN: 273233), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Fourth Marines (Reinforced), First Provisional Marine Brigade, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Guam, Mariana Islands, on 30 July 1944. When the Intelligence Section sent out a patrol to capture Japanese prisoners and obtain vital information, Corporal Baldwin unhesitatingly volunteered to take part in the hazardous mission, courageously advancing toward the hostile objective until a sudden burst of withering fire from ambush wounded a companion in both legs. Fighting with determined aggressiveness throughout the ensuing savage action, he valiantly attempted to go to the rescue of the wounded man who was twice bayoneted by charging Japanese, but was himself fatally struck down by enemy machine gun fire. Corporal Baldwin’s daring initiative and resolute devotion to duty in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
