The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant Herbert J. Bain (MCSN: 0-42365), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Leader of Company L, Third Battalion, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 20 June 1945. Leading his platoon in an attack against strong enemy forces entrenched on commanding ground and heavily armed with grenades and automatic weapons, Second Lieutenant Bain voluntarily exposed himself to enemy fire to rescue one of his men who had been wounded by a sniper. After carrying the casualty to a place of safety, he returned to destroy the hostile sniper. His aggressiveness, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
