The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant Roy C. Bailey (MCSN: 261118), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while a member of Company F, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands on 3 November 1942. When his battalion launched an attack, First Sergeant Bailey, by his active reconnaissance, was thoroughly acquainted with the situation throughout the battle. Mindful that the Third Platoon had been hit hard and having no men at his disposal, he personally proceeded to close a gap left by heavy casualties by moving in and placing himself in the firing line. When the platoon ran short of hand grenades, he withdrew and began to supply them, bringing the weapons forward under tremendous hostile fire until he was seriously wounded twice in the abdomen and one in the left arm. His heroic conduct, maintained at great risk in the face of grave danger, was largely responsible for annihilation of the Japanese strong point.
