The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Walter A. Bachorczyk (MCSN: 993948), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Litter Bearer of the Third Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 17 March 1945. Observing a Marine who was wounded and lying in a shallow depression on the front lines covered by a sniper fire lane, Private Bachorczyk bravely inched his way over the hazardous terrain to the man despite intense enemy opposition. When the wounded man was unwilling to be moved in the face of hostile fire, Private Bachorczyk stood fully erect and, by his own example of courage and fortitude, reassured his fellow Marine and thus succeeded in evacuating him to safety. His cool courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
